HOW PAXIL WORKS
In 1992, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Paxil to treat various psychological disorders, including:
- Depression
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder
- Anxiety
- Panic attacks
- Post-traumatic stress disorder
Paxil is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), which means it prevents receptors in the brain from reabsorbing serotonin that has already been released.
Unfortunately, studies about Paxil side effects have led to multiple warnings from the FDA. If you or a loved one experienced these side effects, our Cincinnati attorneys could help you file a Paxil lawsuit.
PAXIL BIRTH DEFECTS
In 2005, the FDA issued an advisory stating that two studies showed that babies of mothers who took Paxil early in their pregnancies had an increased risk of heart defects.
The FDA advised medical professionals not to prescribe Paxil to women in this population unless there are no other treatment options. Paxil labeling was updated to say that two studies have shown the drug is a risk to the fetus.
In 2011, the FDA issued a
drug safety communication revealing that two studies suggest that taking Paxil during pregnancy increases the risk of the fetus developing persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN).
The communication advised patients and doctors to weigh the risks of SSRI drugs versus the risks of depression in the mother during pregnancy.
A 2015 study found that Paxil increases the risk of autism in babies born to mothers who took the drug while they were pregnant. The study, published in
JAMA Pediatrics, found that SSRI's increase the risk of autism by 200 percent, while other types of antidepressants increase the risk of autism by just 87 percent.

PAXIL LAWSUITS
Thousands of Paxil lawsuits have been filed against manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) on behalf of those who have experienced severe side effects after taking this medication.
The
first Paxil lawsuit involving birth defects went to trial in October 2009 in Philadelphia. The jury found that Paxil was the primary cause of a three-year-old's fatal heart defects and GSK was negligent for failing to warn consumers and doctors about the risks of pregnant women taking Paxil. The child's family was awarded $2.5 million.
Less than one year after this settlement, GSK had settled several hundred more birth defect lawsuits for a total cost of $1.14 billion.

SUICIDAL THOUGHTS
Paxil has also been linked to an increase in suicidal thoughts among adolescents and young children.
In 2004, the FDA issued a Public Health Advisory announcing it was adding a black box warning to Paxil stating that short-term studies revealed that Paxil and other SSRIs increased the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in children, adolescents and young adults.
While the warning does not prohibit doctors from prescribing Paxil to children and adolescents, it advises close monitoring for behavioral changes or suicidal behaviors.
In 2012, GSK pled guilty to a criminal indictment for its promotion of Paxil for the treatment of depression in children and adolescents, which was not approved by the FDA.
GSK also pled guilty to helping publish a medical journal article that made exaggerated claims about the efficacy of using Paxil to treat adolescent depression.
