Jerry W. Cornell, 42, died on Friday evening after being involved in a crash with a tractor-trailer on I-70 near downtown Columbus. Cornell was changing lanes on I-70 westbound near Miller Avenue when his car struck the rear part of a tractor-trailer around 6 p.m. The large truck suffered minimal damage while the drivers side of Cornell's vehicle appeared mangled. Local police are still investigating the fatal collision and trying to determine why Cornell's vehicle struck the truck. A 1-year-old boy, Cornell's foster child, was in the back seat of the car at the time of the accident. The child was not injured. The accident was the first traffic fatality of the year. Less than 48 hours later, Vincent Davis lost control of his vehicle just before 2 a.m. on Karl Road and smashed into a utility pole. Davis was taken to OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital and died on Saturday evening.
