Takata Airbag Recall List Continues To Grow As More Vehicles Are Added

Fourteen different automakers have announced they are once again adding more vehicles to the long and growing list of those currently affected by the Takata airbag recall. Following a meeting with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) earlier this year, several auto manufacturers, including Volkswagen, Ford and BMW, confirmed the addition of nearly five million vehicles to the already massive Takata recall list. This recent expansion brings the number of vehicles affected by the recall to more than 34 million in the United States, and more than seven million worldwide.

Latest Vehicles Affected By Takata Airbag Recall

When news of the defective Takata airbags first reached the general public in April 2013, only six different Honda vehicles were thought to be affected. Since then, Takata has announced that it is wholly unaware of exactly how many vehicles have been manufactured with its faulty airbags. Therefore, the list of affected vehicles continues to grow. An official updated list of all vehicle makes and models with defective Takata airbags will be made available as soon as the NHTSA receives the information from automakers. However, the latest additions to the recall list are expected to include: BMW

On the NHTSA’s VIN Look-Up webpage, owners of Ford and BMW vehicles can enter their automobile’s Vehicle Identification Number to see if they are under recall. In the coming days, Honda, Volkswagen, and Mercedes-Benz will also add searchable VINs to the website. Also, a full and updated list of all recalled vehicles can be found at https://www.nhtsa.gov/equipment/takata-recall-spotlight. The Takata recall is due to the airbags’ defective inflators, which can over inflate the airbags and cause them to explode, sending metal shrapnel throughout the vehicle. To date, ten people have lost their lives due to faulty Takata airbags. The NHTSA has issued the largest known civil penalty against Takata for failing to disclose the defects in its airbag inflators and for providing the NHTSA with incomplete or inaccurate data about its airbags’ safety. If you or someone you love owns a vehicle with a faulty Takata airbag, contact the personal injury attorneys at O'Connor, Acciani and Levy today.
