Ford announced on May 27 that it is recalling 423,000 vehicles for a power steering issue that can make a vehicle very difficult to steer, increasing the likelihood for an accident. Four accidents have been linked to the defect, though no injuries have been reported. The recall covers a variety of vehicles including 2011-2013 Ford Taurus and Flex, Lincoln MKS and MKT; 2011-2012 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ models; and 2011 Mercury Milan. Ford stated that a potential intermittent electrical connection in the steering gear could turn off the electric power steering while driving, shifting the steering system defaults to manual steering mode. This makes the vehicle much more difficult to drive and can significantly increase the risk for accidents, especially at slower speeds. Dealers have been authorized to fix the problem in one of two ways depending on the types of diagnostic trouble codes that are present in the vehicle. They will update the power steering control module software or replace the steering gear. In an unrelated issue, the American manufacturer has also issued a recall for 19,500 2015 Mustangs with 2.3 Liter engines because high underbody temperatures can degrade the fuel tanks and parking brakes.
