Prilosec, a prescribed and over-the-counter medication, has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, heart attack, kidney disease and more.
The drug is part of a class of medications known as proton pump inhibitors, which are typically used to treat heart burn. Several studies have linked these medications, used by more than 15 million Americans, to serious, potentially life-threatening side effects.

PRILOSEC AND KIDNEY DISEASE
In 2016, the
Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published a study that linked Prilosec and other proton pump inhibitors to chronic kidney disease.
Studying hundreds of thousands of participants, it was revealed that the use of proton pump inhibitors increased the risk of chronic kidney disease between 20 – 50 percent. The increased risk was associated with increased dosages. Researchers used data over a 10-year period to come to their final conclusion.
Short term use of the drugs is already linked to kidney problems such as inflammatory kidney disease and acute kidney injury. Chronic kidney disease can lead to kidney failure, which can require dialysis and possibly a kidney transplant.
Early detection is key in preventing the progression of kidney disease. Some signs of kidney disease include:
- Lethargy
- Poor appetite
- Muscle cramping at night
- Swollen feet and ankles

PRILOSEC LINKED TO HEART ATTACK
The risk of kidney disease is not the first safety concern associated with Prilosec and other proton pump inhibitors. In 2015, a study released by
Stanford University revealed that proton pump inhibitors, such as Prilosec, may increase the risk of heart attack by up to 21 percent.
Researchers analyzed the medical records of almost three million patients and found those who took proton pump inhibitors were between 16 and 21 percent more at risk of suffering a heart attack, even if they did not have a history of heart disease.
The findings were solid enough for Nicholas Leeper, a doctor and the study’s senior author, to declare that the drugs may not be as safe as we think.
FDA WARNINGS
While millions of Americans are prescribed these medications, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has released numerous
drug safety warnings on proton pump inhibitors.
In 2010, the FDA released a drug safety communication on the increased risk of hip, wrist and spine fractures among those using proton pump inhibitors. These findings led to changes in product labels.
Prilosec lawsuits have been filed against the drug’s manufacturer, AstraZeneca. The lawsuits allege that AstraZeneca produced a dangerous or defective drug and failed to provide adequate warnings.
