A 60-year-old Columbus, Ohio man was fatally injured Monday morning in a devastating workplace accident. According to Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) data, Ohio leads the Midwest region in workplace deaths. The fatal workplace accident took place at Core Molding Technologies, located in west Columbus. In the press area, the 60-year-old employee was fatally crushed after falling into a hydraulic press shortly after 5 a.m. on June 20, 2016. After being caught in the machine, he suffered catastrophic head injuries and was pronounced dead once paramedics arrived at the accident scene. The accident victim had worked for the company for approximately one year. A coworker was present in the press area when the accident occurred, but was not injured. A number of other employees were working when the accident took place; in order to help them cope with the workplace tragedy, the company has made counseling available to their staff. The Columbus Police Department has ruled out homicide, stating the death did not raise suspicion. Law enforcement investigating the incident did report that a miscommunication of some sort took place before the incident occurred. No charges are being filed thus far, and OSHA as well as the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation have taken over the investigation. According to OSHA reports, Core Molding Technologies had multiple serious violations in the previous two-year period; it is not known whether or not these violations concerned the hydraulic press involved in the deadly accident. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union is working with the business to gain insight into how the incident happened.
