The Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) is reporting that 11 deaths occurred on state roadways over the Memorial Day weekend, which includes Friday, May 27 through Monday, May 30. OSHP reports that troopers were out in full force over the weekend and thanked those who slowed down, buckled up and designated sober drivers. The number of fatalities was a reduction when compared to the 16 fatalities reported last year and the 13 reported in 2014. Of the fatalities reported, four were motorcyclists who were not using a helmet and two were pedestrians. Two of the fatal crashes involved drivers under the influence. OSHP also made 734 arrests for operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Patrols were also out over the weekend as part of a 6-Trooper Project targeting those not wearing their seatbelts. The initiative began on May 23 and ended on Memorial Day. OSHP issued 181 child safety seat violations and another 7,000 citations for seatbelt violations. Police also cited drivers for aggressive driving and driving with a suspended license. In total, more than 700 car accidents were reported over the holiday weekend, the majority of which occurred in Franklin County.
