On Friday evening, a man driving the wrong way down Interstate 71 caused a pile-up that led to road closures for hours. Calls to 911 flooded dispatch just moments before the accident as other drivers saw the vehicle headed northbound on the southbound lanes. Near the ramp to the Ronald Regan Highway around 3:30 a.m. the wrong way vehicle collided head-on with a U-Haul being driven by Lonzell Cash. Cash was not seriously injured and able to escape the truck, which had flipped over, thanks to a Good Samaritan who stopped. Another witness saw the wrong way vehicle slam into another pick-up truck and scatter debris all over the highway. The wrong-way driver, whose identity has not been revealed, was taken to Bethesda North where his condition is unknown. I-71 was closed for six hours and the crash remains under investigation.
